One Reason Why “The Little Things” Make You Happy

"Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things." ~Robert Brault

I have always said “It’s the little things I love the biggest.”  Sure, we can sometimes forget about these tiny comforts but it is worth taking a few minutes to focus on creating some joy.

The little delights that we enjoy are sometimes common to everyone but can be truly,  100% unique to you. (like the old quilt that was your grandma’s or the way your kids laugh at your silly jokes)

By paying attention, (Yes!) even making a list on paper of the things that make your heart burst with happiness, you can bring a little light and fun into every day

These are a few of my favorite (little) things....

okay, yes…I MAY have just sung that like Julie Andrews…..

“raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens”

chickadees at my bird-feeder

soft & squishy yarn

that first sip of coffee in the morning

a new pack of felt tip markers

watercolor paint brushes

fuzzy slippers

the smell of fresh-cut grass

Berardi french-fries & malt vinegar

Fresh Sheets Friday

golden sunlight streaming through trees

children’s artwork

chubby baby feet

getting the giggles (that won’t quit)

watching my husband & kids skip stones

pinecones & pebbles

dog rescue videos

orchids that bloom again

marching bands (okay, not so little)

Twizzlers for road trips

twinkle lights

Learning fun Italian words, like “stuzzicadenti” (toothpick) and “pinguino” (penguin)

You might be wondering....Why does it matter?

“Happiness is in the small stuff.  It’s not in the big life-changing things.  It’s in the every day”~ Paul Dolan

In his book, “Happiness By Design: Change What You Do, Not How You Think” Behavior Scientist, Dolan states that your happiness is determined by how you allocate your attention.

Happy people don’t have more of the good little things in life, they just notice them more.   They are intentional in looking for them.

If you find that you are stressed, overwhelmed, or feeling down, you can make a difference by actually planning where your attention flows.  Writing down the little things can help you choose what to priorotize in your life and work.

    My “little things” are
    tiny ice cubes
my kittens foofy tail (it has it’s own zipcode it’s so big)
the way my kids smell when they get out of the pool
the sound my kittens make watching the bird feeder
the smell of a new children’s book
    fresh vacuumed carpet
when my youngest child has a sincere giggle
hot blankets out of the dryer after playing in the snow
    fresh tomato soup
    a new box of crayons
sitting at the end of the dock watching the sunset
children of have a mature since of humor at a young age
sharpies and highlighters at swim meets
    seeing my children accomplish goals

just a few of my favorites.
